Uo Moung (Oum Moung) is a Tomo temple ruin in Champasak Province, right in the south of Laos. It makes a good detour from visiting the high profile Wat Phu due to its lonely feel and jungle setting.

Uo Moung is actually an Angkorian temple that lies near Wat Phu and was said to have been built as a rest house for the higher profile temple. It’s located on the western bank of the Mekong, not far from the popular town of Champasak. While you are here, a look at Wat Phu is also a must along with a look at Champasak itself.

From Uo Moung temple, which stands sentinel-like amid a fine jungle setting, visitors can also visit Wat Phu (Vat Phou). This World Heritage site is one of the main temples in Laos and a must-see if you have specifically come to see Uo Moung.

Champasak at large has many waterfalls to see, including the Khone waterfalls, along with the beautiful Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands).

Getting There & Away

You can get to Uo Moung from Champasak or Pakse via ferry or bus. Get off at Ban Noi on the ferry and at KM 30 marker on the Pakse-Champasak bus route from where motorized rickshaws can take you to the temple. Pakse has an international airport.
