Tunxi is a pretty, old town in the south of Anhui province, eastern China, and the main gateway to the revered Yellow Mountain (Huangshan Mountain). While the mountain is the main attraction, Tunxi has plenty of charm and is worth spending time in.
Tunxi has its own airport and is well within reach of Shanghai to the east. Its main attraction is the so-called Tunxi Old Street, a wide, one and a half-kilometer-long street featuring myriad shops and cafés and a bunch of giant stones and statues. The houses on the street are pretty, with horse-head walls and blue-tiled roofs.
As nice as it is, most people come to Tunxi for one thing, to visit Huangshan Mountain. This marvelous UNESCO World Heritage site lies above the town and is known for its jagged yellow peaks and remarkable scenery. It is often misty up in the mountain and the view of the highest peaks is dreamlike.
Getting There & Away
Tunxi Airport receives flights from Beijing in around 2 hours, yet not every day. It is better to fly to Shanghai Pudong International Airport and bus it over. Overnight trains also serve Tunxi (Huangshan Station) from Shanghai, although the journey is winding and takes 13 hours.
