Nestled on the banks of the majestic Cagayan River in the lush Cagayan Valley, Tuguegarao is the capital of Cagayan Province on the Philippine island of Luzon. The city presents a number of historic attractions and is an ideal jumping-off point to discover the appealing surroundings.
Among the significant buildings in Tuguegarao is St Peter and Paul Cathedral, the biggest Spanish-built church in the valley and one of the world’s most stunning works of art. San Jacinto Ermita Church is an elevated chapel constructed in 1604 which was once used as a headquarters by American troops during the Filipino-American War in 1899.
Not far from the city are the jaw-dropping Callao Caves, which consist of seven chambers and comprise imposing limestone formations, skylights and a natural chapel. The cave entrance can be accessed by climbing 187 cemented steps.
Another important landmark is the Basilica of Our Lady of Piat, located 33kms from Tuguegarao. This famed place of pilgrimage dates back to the 17th century and contains the shrine of the patroness of Cagayan Valley, internationally known as the Black Mary.
