Tomohon is a relatively new city in North Sulawesi. Located in the highlands, close to the imposing volcanic mountain of Mahawu, it is a must-see for anyone interested in local culture.
The city is also known as ‘the city of flowers’ and makes a pleasant change from the ubiquitous beach resorts. There are nurseries everywhere and an annual flower festival as well as beautiful front gardens. The flowers are a key attraction to the city with people from across the world.
Tomohon is a quiet city and much smaller than neighboring Manado and Bitung, but this is part of its charm. The tourist infrastructure is somewhat undeveloped and there are not many manmade sights to explore, but it is the natural beauty which is its biggest drawcard.
Getting There & Away
Tomohon is easily reached by air as nearby Manado is home to an international airport. The airport receives flights from Singapore in 3 hours, 30 minutes, Malaysia in 4 hours and the Philippines in 1 hour, 30 minutes. Once at the airport, there are local buses and taxis to take visitors to Tomohon.
