It may be one of Chiang Mai’s most popular attractions, but there’s something not quite right about the world’s most savage animals acting like domestic cats.

Of course the big pull here is the chance to have your photo taken while cuddling or stroking one of these fearsome creatures, but few visitors seem to wonder why these tigers act so out of character.

When you arrive, you’ll find you’re faced with several options for visiting with the tigers, with prices ranging from 420B to around 1,500B depending on whether you go in a cage with babies, half-grown or fully mature cats. Then you’ll have around 10-15 minutes to take photos (or have some taken by the staff here at extra cost) before it’s time to leave.

Our advice is to give this place a miss, and if you’re curious about tigers, go see them in the local zoo where their environment is a bit more natural.

Most people visit Tiger Kingdom as part of a tour to the Mae Sa Valley. With your own transport, drive north of Chiang Mai on H107 and after passing through Mae Rim, turn left into the Mae Sa Valley. The site is off to the north of this road after about 500 meters. The nearest airport is in Chiang Mai.
