Thaton is a sleepy town that was formerly the capital of Mon State in which it rests. Thaton is quiet and full of charm and local spirit and it sits beside a rail line that runs from Bago to Mottama.

Thaton is a former sea port on the Gulf of Martaban but due to silting, the coastline is now 10 miles from the town, in the south of the country on the Tenasserim plains. There are a few attractions to admire throughout the town, including pagodas and religious shrines.

Thaton has a small airfield and is easily reached by train or road. The town has a lot of Indian influences dating back to the 11th century, which can be see in its architecture, shops as well as its people.

Getting There & Away

The nearest airport is in Yangon - the most popular route into the area - which is situated 90 miles from Thaton. Ye has a train station that runs services from all over Myanmar from which travelers can get a private taxi, minivan or hire car to Thaton.
