Formerly known as Syriam, the city of Thanlyin is situated on the Irrawaddy Delta and was once an important seventeenth century port. Just outside Yangon, Thanlyin makes a good day trip destination.
Most people travel to Thanlyin to see the impressive Kyauktan Ye Le Pagoda, which is located approximately 20kms to the south of the city on a small island in Hmaw Won Creek. This pretty temple complex contains a grand collection of artwork.
Visitors to Thanlyin can also cross the Yangon River to explore the town of Kyauktan, where there are a number of good places to eat and a vibrant market.
Getting There & Away
Tourists can only use the main airport at Yangon. There is a direct rail link from Yangon to Thanlyin (2 hours). The pretty town of Kyauktan is situated just across the river and there are regular boats from here to Thanlyin (20 minutes).
