Take a break from soaking up the sun on the beach and explore these pretty caves, which are located in among rubber plantations in the center of Ko Lanta Yai.
Hire the guide who lives near the entrance and take your time to really explore these cool caves. Enter the caverns by descending a long wooden ladder and pause for a moment or two as your eyes adjust to the darkness before marvelling at the glistening stalactites and stalagmites.
Creep quietly past the sleeping bats and squeeze through rocky crevices to enter enormous naturally formed caves. This can be turned into a daytrip by hiking through the forest from Hat Khlong Nin instead of taking a pick-up truck.
Getting There & Away
The nearest airport to Tham Khao Mai Kaew is at Krabi, which is a 1-hour, 20-minute flight from Bangkok. Take a taxi from the airport to Klong Chi Lard Pier (20 minutes), from where you can take a ferry across to Ko Lanta (2 hours). Share a pick-up truck from the pier for the three kilometers ride to Hat Khlong Nin and then a further two kilometers through rubber plantations (20 minutes).
