The peaceful recreational mountain resort of Tawangmangu in Central Java is particularly renowned for its fresh climate and stunning scenery. Perched on Mt Lawu’s western slope at an altitude of about 4,300 feet above sea level, this wonderful spot lies 25 miles east of Solo and promises a cool getaway from the city’s heat.
Although the weather is its major draw, with temperatures ranging between 71 and 88°F, Tawangmangu has much more to offer. One of the most frequented attractions within the resort’s 20-hectare forest area is the breathtaking, 266-foot high Grojogan Sewu waterfall, which has a chilly water pool at the bottom. In front of the gate, horses are available for an exhilarating ride around the region, while you can also hike through the enclosing hills or enjoy the horticultural gardens.
The road from Solo winds through spectacular green terraced hills partly covered in white mist, past hot water springs and several temples (candi). Dating back to the Majapahit Kingdom during the 15th century, Candi Sukuh is a Hindu temple beautifully placed in the center of a tea and coffee plantation near the mountain village of Berjo and is definitely worth a stopover. Other cultural events include some appealing traditional ceremonies held in the villages of Dukutan and Mondosiyo.
