Situated just to the north of Thandwe, the sleepy little town of Taunggok doesn’t receive much attention from tourists as most find Myanmar’s cities far more interesting.

There aren’t really any attractions in Taunggok and the only reason people visit the town is that it is situated near a port, with regular boats sailing to the town of Sittwe. It is usually necessary to spend the night in Taunggok before continuing on the journey to Thandwe.

Taunggok is easy to explore on foot. The people who live there are friendly and often invite travelers to join them for a drink and some food. The surrounding countryside is pretty, which makes the wait much more bearable.

Getting There & Away

The easiest way to get to Taunggok is by bus from Thandwe (2 hours). Tourists can only usually use the main airport at Yangon. There is a small airport in Sittwe, which is occasionally open to tourists, and the journey takes 3 hours from Yangon, while the boat trip from Sittwe to Taunggok takes about 4 hours.
