Tanjung Pandan is the capital of Belitung Island in the province of Bangka-Belitung, southeast Sumatra. Tanjung Pandan is the primary access center to the world class beaches of Belitung.
Belitung Island is a big tin producer like its next door neighbor, Bangka. It also has stunning beaches but without the general bustle of Bangka Island. Tanjung Pandan’s main attraction is Tanjungpendam Beach, a gorgeous stretch of sand with light blue waters.
Other attractions in Tanjung Pandan worth checking out are the Geology Museum, with its interesting collections, Tanjung Pandan Zoo, and a large public pool. Away from Tanjung Pandan are the even better beaches of Tanjung Kelayang and Tanjung Tinggi, where the snorkeling is world class. Island-hopping around Belitung Island is a popular pastime.
Getting There & Away
Tanjung Pandan’s Bulutumbang Airport is only a 45-minute flight from Jakarta, the closest major airport to the city. Flights run from the Indonesian capital daily as well as from Palembang. You can also get here by ferry from Jakarta and Bangka.
