Nestled on an isthmus between two mighty lakes that are connected by rapids running through the city, Tampere is a popular and chilly destination in western Finland. Shoppers can while away a day or two on the main shopping street, Hämeenkatu, while everyone has to sample the local black sausage with a spoonful of lingonberry jam for that authentic taste of the city. Loads of museums, restaurants and hotels set up the city center while in the surrounding area the walking trails are brilliant as long as you don’t end up in a brawl with a bear (you’ll lose).
Surrounded by water in the shape of two great lakes, Tampere is a popular Finnish tourist destination with an abundance of quality shopping, tasty sausages and interesting museums all within convenient walking distance of each other. If you’ve got a warm coat and you want to see one of Europe’s upcoming tourist venues, head over for a splendid weekend break.
Cruises around the lakes are great fun and afford spectacular views of the city while the hearty local fodder has to be tasted (particularly the black sausage with lingonberry jam). Finns like a drink so watch out for obliterated locals on a Friday night. Try to avoid the bears as well if you head out on one of the many spectacular walking trails in the area.
