It is very popular with pilgrims from across the country and also from Tibet and is growing in popularity with tourists. It was once home to the current Dalai Lama and as such receives Buddhist tourists from across the world. As well as the monastery itself, Ta’er Si is also an excellent place to people watch as people from all different cultures and countries arrive daily.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and yet another attraction. The views boast imposing mountains, fields dotted with horses and cattle, wild flowers, rice paddies and thick forests. There are treks available for the adventurous and footpaths leading up to the monastery.
The monastery dates back to 1560 and highlights include the 600 monks who worship here, the great hall of meditation, the Great Hall of the Golden Roof and the pepul tree, which was the reason for building the monastery as it is believed to be imprinted with Buddha’s footprints.
