Sungai Kedang Kepala (Kedang Kepala River) is one of the major tributaries of the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan, Borneo. It is popular with those into boat cruises and life in the rainforest in general.
The river lies in the southern part of East Kalimantan, and to the west of the town of Samarinda, and hosts a huge variety of trees, plants and animals. The region is also home to a variety of intriguing indigenous tribes, including the Dayak Kenyah, Bahau, Wehea and Kutai.
Most visitors who come to the Sungai Kedang Kepala go on an extended boat trip and jungle trek adventure. A major attraction in the river region is the Wehea National Park, which features virgin rainforest and exotic wildlife. Trekking in the park can lead to seeing a variety of birds, lizards, orang-utans, and even cloud leopards if you’re lucky.
The region is largely isolated and staying in a Dayak village is generally part of the experience. The people here have a rich, traditional culture and are warm and friendly.
Getting There & Away
You can get to Sungai Kedang Kepala via Samarinda or Balikpapan, both of which have airports. Balikpapan’s Sepinggan International Airport is the main gateway to East Kalimantan and the nearest major airport. Both airports receive flights from Jakarta. Loa Janan is the main launch point for trips to Sungai Kedang Kepala, where boats can be chartered.
