One of the few places in this part of the world where traditional skills are still carried out as a way of life rather than for the sake of tourism, the village of Sukawati is located on the outskirts of the popular tourist hub of Denpasar.

The main attraction here is the art market, which attracts artisans and buyers from all over Bali. Most people set up shop early in the morning and the best time to visit is between 06:00 and 10:00.

All manner of arts and crafts are available for purchase at this magnificent market and this is a great place to shop for handmade souvenirs and gifts. Visitors will also find other items such as fruit, vegetables, cakes and ceremonial items for sale.

A number of people also turn out to entertain visitors to the art market and after browsing for bargains visitors can grab a seat and watch traditional Kris dancing as well as puppet performances, held using traditional leather puppets. Those who are looking for clothes and jewelry will also have their pick here, and paintings are created right here to order by the artists.

Sukawati is located just 17kms from Denpasar, with many tour companies in the city offering guided tours. Visitors can also travel here under their own steam by taking a bus or hiring a vehicle in the city.
