Suifenhe is a small city right on the edge of China, on the border with Russia and within reach of Vladivostok. It sits in southeastern Heilongjiang Province and is a stop-off for those en route to Russia.

Suifenhe shares its name with the Suifen River and is China’s largest port on the Sea of Japan. It is situated where the old Chinese Eastern Railway crossed the Russian border and it is possible to cross over today by train.

Tourists can use yuan or rubles in Suifenhe and changing US dollars is also possible, albeit time-consuming. The town looks distinctly Russian but has a Chinese feel. There’s not much in the way of attractions in Suifenhe apart from the many souvenir shops and markets. The appeal of crossing the border is the main draw.

Getting There & Away

Suifenhe is an 8-hour train journey from Harbin, the Heilongjiang capital. It lies 400kms to the west, while Vladivostok is 150kms to the southeast and receives flights from all over at Vladivostok International Airport.
