Chiang Mai is a small city, but like any other city it needs green spaces where its inhabitants can take a break from the built-up environment.
Unfortunately this small park, located in the southwest corner of the Old City, is the only green recreation space anywhere near the center of the city, though of course outside the city are the endless rolling hills of North Thailand.
The park is attractively landscaped, with lakes, towering palms and flower beds, and there are lots of benches in the shade. You’ll also find vendors renting out mats that you can roll out for a snooze on the grass in the shade, as well as food to feed the fish in the lake. If you buy some and feed the fish, don’t be surprised if flocks of pigeons come flapping around demanding a share of the goodies.
During the week, it’s usually a quiet and relaxing place, with just a few locals reading newspapers on benches, but at weekends it can get very busy as families arrive for a picnic. At the time of festivals such as the Chiang Mai Flower Festival in February, the park becomes a hive of activity.
If you forgot to pack a picnic before going to the park, don’t despair as there’s a cafe selling all kinds of drinks and food just inside the entrance. Also, snack vendors often ply their trade in front of the park.
