Opened in 1972 and named after Queen Sirikit, this huge dam on the Nan River holds back a reservoir of around 260 square kilometers, and because of its remote location, about 70km east of Uttaradit, it is a popular destination for domestic visitors, especially in the cool season when lots of wild flowers are in bloom.
The reservoir is also frequented by anglers, who try to catch the giant snakehead in its waters.
The dam itself consists of an 800-meter long embankment, and the views across the (normally) still waters behind it are very relaxing. The shady grounds around the dam make a pleasant place for a stroll, and though most visitors just hang around for half an hour then move on, there is accommodation available at the administrative center about a kilometer before the dam, as well as a riverside restaurant.
It’s worth combining a visit here with one to Sak Yai Forest Park, which is only around 10km south of the dam on Highway 1146.
