The Balinese town of Ubud is one of Indonesia’s cultural hotpots. Not only is there a plethora of museums, temples, shrines, and galleries, there are several institutions offering to educate and promote many of the cultural aspects on display. One such establishment is the popular Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women.

The word Seniwati comes from the Indonesian terms of seni, which means art, and wait, which means women. The purpose of the gallery is to promote the talents of women artists both within Bali and from around Southeast Asia. The Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women was established in 1991, and has since grown substantially.

There are three galleries located on the Seniwati Gallery site. The permanent collections of paintings are found in the Lotus Pond Gallery, which contains both traditional and modern artworks. The Rice Fields is the second largest gallery in the establishment, and offers visitors the chance to purchase some of the artwork on display. Thirdly, visitors shouldn’t pass up a chance to see some of the children’s artwork on display in the Banana Grove Gallery.

The gallery also offers several interesting services for guests, including a children’s school, studio art courses, and a gift shop to purchase souvenirs, handicrafts and paintings. The Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women is certainly one of the most attractive galleries in the town of Ubud.
