Situated in the center of South Sulawesi, Sengkang is a small town along the river with a hand woven silk industry dating back hundreds of years. The city is also close to the spectacular Danau Tempe Lake.
Sengkang is located approximately 170kms from the capital of South Sulawesi and is easily reached, with daily buses taking around eight hours. There are no other alternatives and the buses can sometimes be uncomfortable and crowded.
There are some great silk weaving workshops to visit which show the silk making process from start to finish. Most hotels offer tours to the workshops including transport, food and a guide. The nearby Danau Tempe Lake is a great attraction offering an abundance of native wildlife, boat tours and water activities.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Sengkang from the regional capital city of Makassar is straightforward, with buses leaving directly each day. The journey takes on average around 8 hours. Makassar Airport has daily flights leaving for both Bali and Jakarta, host to major international airports.
