Sangir Islands are a group of islands in northern Indonesia. They are located northeast of Sulawesi, approximately halfway between Sulawesi and Mindanao (Philippines). The largest island is Sangir Besar and the main town is Tahuna.
Sangir is a group of volcanic islands, with the largest volcano being Mount Awu on Sangir Besar. Tahuna is not only the main town, but also the main transport hub and home to the archipelago’s busiest port and only airport, Naha.
There is much to see and do on the islands, with the most popular pursuits being diving and climbing. Despite being active, the volcanoes offer excellent climbing opportunities and the clear waters host an abundance of fish and other tropical sea life that can be enjoyed with a snorkel and mask.
Getting There & Away
The most convenient and quickest way to reach the Sangir Islands is to fly into Tahuna. This small domestic airport receives daily flights from all across Indonesia including from nearby Manado. From Tahuna, it is possible to take a ferry to other islands in the archipelago. If you do not want to fly, or have extra time on your hands, you might want to take a ferry from Manado to Tahuna (11 hours) and enjoy the slow journey.
