Sambor is the modern name of the 7th century “city-state” of Sambhupura, contemporary of Sambor Prei Kuk and the Chenla Empire.
The current Sambor is known for its restoration of Cambodia’s largest temple, Wat Sarsar Mouy Rouy, locally known as the 100-Pillar Pagoda (although it now boasts 116 columns).
Approximately 40 km north of Kratie, the area was once a rich trove of artifacts that predated the Angkor empire, though it was ravaged during the Pol Pot regime. The 100-pillar Pagoda was rebuilt in 1997 after having been destroyed in the 1970s. Overnight stays at the refurbished wat can be arranged by contacting the Kratie Wat Committee.
Getting There
Sambor is located 35km north of Kratie. You can hire a motodop taxi that costs about $6, or a bike rental from within the town.

- When to Go: Best visited during the dry season months (November-May) when road conditions are best.
- Nearest Town: Sambor is 141 km south of Stung Treng and 345 km northeast of Phnom Penh with very well-paved roads. Buses usually take about 5 hours from Phnom Penh.
- Don’t Miss: The best views stretched across the Mekong River, and even a trip to see the dolphins.
