Covering the entire Lao region west of the mighty Mekong river, Xaignabouli province is located in the northwest area of Laos. It is neighbors with bordering country Thailand to the south and also shares borders with Vientiane province and Lung Prabang province to the east.

In the early 20th century, Xiagnabouli province was relinquished from Siam (today Thailand) and given to French Indochina. However, Thailand gained control of the province once again in the mid-1940s until it was returned to French control.

Not as popular for tourism as many of the other bordering provinces, Xaignabouli province still offers gorgeous views of mountain ranges along with the Hongsa Elephant festival in February.

Flying or arriving to Vientiane and either connecting to a domestic flight or bus to Xaignabouli is the easiest route here. Domestic flights via Lao Airlines leave to Xaignabouli from Vientiane along with buses and boat that travel via the Mekong river.
