Known as the ‘Garden City of the North’, the pretty city of Sagay is located in the province of Negros Occidental. Most visitors bypass the city, heading straight to the Sagay Marine Reserve, located just outside the city.
However, the city of Sagay does have its own modest charm and this is a pleasant place to spend a little time. Although many people simply visit on a daytrip from Bacolod, the city has a number of good hotels and restaurants, making this a reasonable place to spend the night.
Sagay was a former Spanish settlement and boasts a good number of interesting buildings such as churches and museums. Fishing in the Bulanon River is a popular pastime with locals, which means that there is plenty of fresh fish available when it comes to dinner time.
Getting There & Away
The easiest way to get to Sagay is from Bacolod, where there is a large airport with regular flights from Manila (1 hour). There are also regular buses to Bacolod from towns and cities such as San Carlos (4 hours). Sagay is a 2-hour bus or jeepneyride from Bacolod.
