Located on the banks of the Moei River, which acts as the border between Thailand and Burma, this market is a classic frontier outpost, with vendors selling a staggering range of products from both countries, as well as items from India, China, Korea and further afield.

The market is located directly beneath the Thai-Burmese Friendship Bridge and covers a huge area. Here you’ll see all kinds of food, household goods, hand-made furniture, electronics equipment, clothes and gems as well.

It’s a fascinating place to wander round to see the range of items on sale and maybe even pick up a souvenir, but at the time of our research trip it was under a meter of water due to unseasonal floods, so vendors were unable to sell their wares.

Take a songthaew to the Thai-Burmese Friendship Bridge from Mae Sot, which takes about 15 minutes. Even better, hire a bicycle or motorbike and while you’re there, take a look at Wat Thai Wattanaram and Wat Phra That Doi Hin Kiu at the same time.
