Located at the upper part of the Kapuas River, the small town of Putussibau is surrounded by rainforest and intense natural beauty, just waiting to be discovered.
Although Putussibau is often just a short rest stop on the long cruise along the Kapuas River, it is also possible to spend a little time here and perhaps even spend the night in a Dayak hut in the village. Trekking through the jungle is a popular activity, and there is a wide range of wildlife to spot as you creep through the undergrowth.
Although it is possible to drive to Putussibau from the city of Pontianak in just a few hours, by far the best way to get here is to join a group and take a boat right along the Kapuas River. The journey can take several days, so take plenty of provisions and be prepared to spend a couple of nights along the way in one of the small tribal villages located on the banks of the river.
Getting There & Away
The best way to Putussibau is from Pontianak, where there is an airport with regular flights to Jakarta (2 hours) and Kuching (1 hour). Putussibau can be reached by bus from Pontianak in three hours, or it is possible to take a longboat boat up the river, which takes three or four days.
