Pulau Selayar is the main island of the Selayar Islands off the coast of South Sulawesi in Indonesia. The island has breathtaking scenery and an abundance of natural wildlife.
The island is long and narrow, covering an area of over 648 square kilometers, and has a rugged coastline with numerous bays, rocky coves and white sand beaches. The native wildlife and fauna is spectacular, with some truly fascinating creatures and exotic plants.
The best time of year to visit Pulau Selayar for diving is between November and December as well as from March to May when there is crystal clear visibility. There are a host of dive companies providing extensive courses and daytrips to dive sites. Snorkeling is also popular, with most resorts providing free use of equipment.
The main town on Pulau Selayar is Benteng and it has a wide variety of accommodation ranging from inexpensive beachside huts to more comfortable air-conditioned bungalows with modern amenities.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Pulau Selayar involves a 5-hour bus journey from the capital city of South Sulawesi, Makassar, to the coastal town of Bulukumba. Makassar has an airport with daily flights arriving from both Bali and Jakarta international airports. Once you have arrived in Bulukumba there are ferry services traveling to Pulau Selayar (2 hours).
