This Togean island is more remote than its neighbors but receives a steady stream of visitors due to its unique natural environment. The Togeans in general are extremely remote and never crowded.

The overarching reason to visit the Togean Islands is to enjoy an absolute break from the hurried life. There aren’t many amenities here (such as ATMs or fine restaurants), but the sort of traveler willing to spend the better part of two days getting here doesn’t usually need to be pampered.

Diving, snorkeling and beach-basking are the headlining activities and are superb anywhere in the Togean Islands. Pulau Malenge is unique in that it hosts a dense inland jungle that appeals to trekkers and wildlife lovers.

The resorts can connect visitors with experienced guides that lead hikes into the forests. The elusive tarsier (the world’s smallest primate) lives here and can be seen clinging to the sides of trees in the jungle. The tarsier is only endemic in a few places worldwide so it’s a major attraction.

Getting There & Away

There are two major gateways with ferry connections to the Togeans: Ampana (4 hours) and Gorontalo (13 hours). In either event, ferries dock at Wakai where onward charters to Pulau Malenge (1 hour, 30 minutes) are available. Connecting to Jakarta’s international airport is easiest through Gorontalo via a bus ride to Manado, where a regional airport connects to Jakarta.
