This idyllic island in Indonesia’s Togean archipelago is one of the best-kept holiday secrets in the world. Arranging transport this far off the beaten track can be tiresome, but the secluded sandy beaches are absolutely worth it.
Kadidiri Island boasts glassy waters, extensive coral habitats and what is probably the best beach in the Togean Islands (an area already famed for its beaches). Beachfront bungalows and rustic resorts are scattered across the coastline, and lounging in a beach chair or hammock is high on most visitors’ list of priorities.
Meals are catered by the resorts, but simple. Expect banana pancakes for breakfast and copious amounts of fresh seafood. There aren’t many extra amenities in the islands, and foreign currency will get visitors nowhere (no ATMs, banks or exchange booths).
Snorkeling and scuba diving are first-rate activities, the latter of which is especially popular on Pulau Kadidiri. With few exceptions, this is the place divers need to base themselves to enjoy the greatest breadth of facilities. The Togean Islands have all major coral types as well as WWII wreck sites.
Getting There & Away
Getting to Kadidiri requires dedication. First, fly from Jakarta International Airport to Luwuk or Manado, both of which offer onward travel by land and sea. Connect to Ampang or Gorontalo and then book a ferry to Wakai (12-plus hours). From here it’s only a matter of chartering a local boat to Pulau Kadidiri.
