The 10th century temple of Prasat Neang Khmau (“Temple of the Black Lady”) is an easy addition to a day trip to Phnom Chissor or Angkor Borei and Phnom Da.

While not particularly impressive, the temple is located just off the main road between Takeo and Phnom Penh, and is associated with an interesting legend. According to one version of the tale, a “black lady” was banished from her kingdom for her promiscuous behavior; another recounts a “virgin” who was locked away in the temple in order to maintain her chastity.

In addition to a few decent lintel carvings and pleasant grounds, which include a small school, there is supposedly a statue of ‘the black lady’ in a small tower beside the ancient towers, but the chamber is typically locked.

The easiest way to get to Prasat Neang Khmau is via rental car from Phnom Penh, stopping at the temple along the way to or from Phnom Chissor and/or Takeo. The temple is located just off National Road No.2, just north of the turnoff to Phnom Chissor.
