Phnom Prich Sanctuary is one of Cambodia’s premier wildlife reserves. It covers a vast area of millions of acres in the Eastern Plains, not far from the Vietnam border, and is easily one of the top tourist destinations in the remote Mondulkiri Province… for those willing and able to get out there.
The scenery is almost idyllic and is one of deep rain forests and long rivers.
A major highlight of Phnom Prich Sanctuary is the profusion of endangered species here, including both reptiles and mammals. There are tigers and elephants in Phnom Prich Sanctuary as well as smaller jungle cats, rare deer, and wild water buffalo. The sanctuary is also the perfect environment for a great many bird species, including giant ibises and saurus crane.
The Cambodian government, aided by the WWF, has gone to great lengths to ensure the protection and survival of the flora and fauna in Phnom Prich Sanctuary. It is, in fact, only one of many protected areas along the border region with Vietnam, but is perhaps the best example.
Tours and treks of Phnom Prich Sanctuary can be undertaken from both Sen Monorom and from Kratie; you can even camp within the rainforest. Travel agencies and the Tourist Center in Sen Monorom can provide further information and organize trips.
Getting There
It is best to get on a tour from Sen Monorom or Kratie. From Phnom Penh, Sen Monorom is a day’s journey overland.
