Phitsanulok is a small province in Thailand’s lower north that is mostly flat like the Central Plains, though the eastern part of the province is quite hilly and contains some national parks that are well worth visiting.

The city of Phitsanulok, one of the largest and oldest provincial capitals in Thailand, is a bustling crossroads of routes, with major north-south and east-west highways intersecting here.

In the Ayutthaya period the city of Phitsanulok was a royal capital of great power. Today, the city is a busy and prospering place with enough attractions to keep visitors occupied for a day or two, though most tourists are just passing through on their way to nearby Sukhothai. The city has several ancient temples, including Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahatat Woramahawihan (better known as Wat Yai), and Wat Ratburana temples, which are conveniently located almost next door to each other.

The province boasts four national parks, two of which are a major draw for both domestic and foreign visitors. Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, which spreads over Phitsanulok and Phetchabun provinces, is one of Thailand’s largest and most visited national parks, while the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, also partly in Petchabun Province, was an important Communist hide-out during the 1970s and features some unusual rock formations.

Transport links within the province are good with regular bus and train services linking all main towns and cities, and an airport with flights from Bangkok. There’s a reasonable choice of accommodation at all levels, though it can’t compare to more tourist-oriented towns like nearby Sukhothai.
