Phetchabun Province hardly appears on the radar of any foreign tourists; in fact, it’s not even mentioned in most guide books.
However, it has recently become a popular escape for Bangkokians looking for a cool hill retreat that is not too far from the city. As a result, Swiss-lodge style resorts are popping up everywhere, though most cater exclusively to a Thai clientele.
Located 346km from Bangkok, and almost in the geographical center of Thailand, Petchabun is known for its agricultural productivity (its former name, Phuenchapura, means the ‘land of crops and food’, while Petchabun means ‘perfect diamond’). An historically prosperous area due to the abundance of its harvests, with a pleasant climate and unspoiled mountains and forests, it is beginning to become popular as a holiday destination.
The province’s main attractions are its national parks, which include Nam Nao, Tat Mok and Khao Kho, as well as the historical park at Si Thep. In the parks you can wander nature trails, visit waterfalls, and if you’re lucky, spot some wildlife.
There’s not much to see in the town of Petchabun itself, which sprawls along the fringes of Highway 21, though the temples of Wat Traiphum and Wat Mahathat are worth a quick look if you’re passing through.
