Actually two cities, Phan Rang and Thap Cham are the collective capital of Vietnam’s southern Ninh Thuan Province. The landscape features cactus groves and rice paddies.

The Champa Kingdom ruled here for 1,400 years, finally losing their grip in the 1600s. Today there are two major remnants of that kingdom: unique rock towers with heavy Indian influence and the oppressed Cham ethnic minority.

A visit to Phan Rang Thap Cham is worthwhile just for the change of scenery and the opportunity to explore what’s left of the ancient Champa Kingdom. Prickly-pear cacti are everywhere, and long pants are essential for day hikes. Grapes are also grown here, so you’re sure to see trellises and vineyards wherever you go.

There are two major sites in the area. The Cham towers draw the most tourists, while the Chinese pagoda is a greater draw for ethnic Chinese living in the region. Both are worth a visit if you’re in the area.
