Panay is the westernmost of the celebrated Visaya island group in the central Philippines, with Negros to the south and Masbate to the north. It’s best known for nearby Boracay Island.
Apart from beautiful Boracay Island just off the northwest coast of Panay, the south of the island is perhaps the most interesting part. Iloilo lies down here and is the provincial capital and main city. It used to be known as the ‘Queen City of the South’ and comes with a compact downtown and a hip vibe. Nearby Guimaras is also worth a look.
The interior of Panay features interesting, small villages along with excellent outdoors action. The trekking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and kayaking is all good, with Iloilo City being the main base for excursions.
Boracay is the main draw to Panay, however, an island paradise in the true sense of the word. It is akin to the look of Saint Tropez and Acapulco and features the legendary White Beach as its main highlight. This beach stretches for over four kilometers and is perfectly white. Bulabog Beach is also beautiful. Water sports (especially diving), shopping and eating are all done to excess on Boracay.
Getting There & Away
Iloilo City is the main travel hub for Panay, receiving flights from all over the Philippines. There are also airports along the north coast mainly for visitors to Boracay. Iloilo City Airport is less than an hour by plane from Manila. Ferries come into Iloilo City from most of the other Visayas and there are ports all over the island.
