Oecussi is a dry, mountainous region in the western part of East Timor. There is very little here for travellers to see and do and most prefer to visit the capital city of Dili instead.
Oecussi is the poorest region of East Timor and one of the poorest places in the world. Don’t expect to find tourist attractions, fancy hotels and restaurants selling international cuisine in this dusty town.
However, life doesn’t get much realer than in Oecussi and if you need a serious break from the tourist scene, this is a good place to come and get a little perspective. Water is scarce here, however, so you should bring your own supply, along with a tent to spend the night in.
Getting There & Away
Oecussi is very difficult to get to as the roads are bad. Most people arrive by ferry, with departures from Dili twice a week, and the journey takes 12 hours.
