Nong Khiaw is a very small Laotian town located on the banks of the Nam Ou River. Its beauty is heightened by the imposing limestone mountains which overlook the community and the river.
The town is quite popular with backpackers as it is off the beaten track but still complete with a good choice of accommodation, restaurants and bars. Despite this, amenities are still basic and luxuries such as hot showers virtually unheard of. Private bathrooms are also rare and concrete walls inexistent.
There are a limited number of sights to see in and around the town. Local caves located were the sites of many deaths during the Vietnam War as the villagers used them as shelters. They have been well preserved and are worth visiting. Nong Khiaw’s only temple is also worthwhile visiting as it dates back over 250 years.
Other than these attractions, walking round the town will undoubtedly offer a number of unique experiences and the river makes for an ideal place to unwind.
