Located about 40km south of Mae Sot, this national park covers a huge 855 square kilometers, but most people drive just inside the entrance to see the waterfall after which it is named - Pha Charoen.
What makes this waterfall so special is that it tumbles over 97 ledges, most of which are visible from its base, so it just makes you want to grab for the camera. It is particularly attractive in the rainy season, when the water is a reddish brown color, which contrasts beautifully with the surrounding lush green vegetation.
There are lots more waterfalls in the park, including Huai Tapu-kor Waterfall, which is near the 33km market on Highway 1090, and hot springs too, but there’s no accommodation apart from tents.
Getting There
The main entrance to the park and the waterfall itself are located to the left off Highway 1090 between Mae Sot and Umphang near the 41km marker. You could take a songthaew from Mae Sot bound for Umphang and ask to be let off at the park entrance, though it’s much easier if you have a rented vehicle and make a quick stop on the way to Umphang.
