Occupying an area of nearly 1,000 square kilometers, Nam Nao National Park is one of Thailand’s most expansive and stunning reserves, occupying a unique and captivating landscape.

It is located within the Phetchabun mountain range and spans both Chaiyaphum and Phetchabun provinces. Phu Pha Jit mountain is the park’s loftiest peak at 1,271 meters, featuring a lush topography of evergreen forest and meandering streams.

The park is densely wooded with dipterocarp, evergreen, deciduous hill evergreen and pine forest. The forest floor of Nam Nao’s unforested areas has a verdant ground cover of grasses, which combined with the park’s streams, salt licks and areas of thick forest provide a diverse habitat for the wildlife, which includes elephants, tigers, leopards, banteng, deer, Asiatic black bears, foxes, porcupines, wild pigs, guar and rabbits. There are also many medicinal plants and orchids within the forest.

Over 200 species of bird also inhabit the park. When following the trails, visitors will notice birds such as parrots, warblers, hornbills, babblers and Siamese firebacks. With around 340 butterfly species in the park, visitors are treated to a colorful experience.

The combination of mountains and forests means the park has a cool climate, particularly at night and early in the morning. The daytime temperatures are pleasant and the average annual temperature is 25˚C. The rainy season runs between July and October, and the cool season can be very cold, sometimes frosty with temperatures falling below 0˚C.

Some of the park’s main attractions include Sai Thong Waterfall, Heaw Sai Waterfall, Phu Khor Viewpoint and Tam Yai Nam Nao Cave.

Access is from Highway 12, which connects Lom Sak (about 30km to the west) and Khon Kaen (about 150km to the east). Both of these cities operate regular buses into Nam Nao. Khon Khaen operates a regional airport and can be reached from Bangkok in less than an hour.
