Nakhon Si Thammarat is a city in the south of Thailand and the capital of the province of the same name. It is one of the most historic places in Thailand boasting ancient walls and relics.

Nakhon Si Thammarat dates back hundreds of years and one of the oldest provinces in the whole of Thailand. It is brimming with interesting temples, ruins and pagodas that tell of story of the region’s history. The city boasts a large population of 110,000 people, most of which are Buddhist Thais. The city has an ancient wall that still segregates parts similar to that found in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai.

The city if often referred to as Nakhon and it is the second largest province in the south of the country. There are pretty beaches to relax on and the inland landscape is made up of verdant jungle and gushing waterfalls. Nakhon Si Thammarat is home to an amazing temple known as Wat Phra Mahathat that stands at an impressive 78 meters tall and is surrounded by 173 smaller chedi’s.

Getting There & Away

Nakhon Si Thammarat is 380 miles south of the capital city of Bangkok. Two trains leave Bangkok twice daily and travel to nearby Surat Thani on a journey that takes 12 hours either over night or during the day. Then a bus, minivan or taxi can take you from Surat Thani to Nakhon. Surat Thani is also home to the nearest international airport and the flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani will take one hour and 45 minutes.
