Located on the main street of Jalan Raya in the town of Ubud, the Museum Puri Lukisan (Museum of Fine Arts) is currently the longest standing museum in Ubud, and in possession of a selection of Bali’s most prized pieces of artwork. The museum is over 50 years old, and has developed into a truly magnificent landmark for Bali tourism.
There are three main pavilions or buildings which house some of the most fascinating art work in Indonesia. The north pavilion is known as the Pitamaha Gallery, and is renowned for its I Gusti Nyoman Lempad exhibition. The west pavilion is home to the Ida Bagus Made Estate collection of art, while the eastern building is used primarily for temporary collections.
Despite its grand size, spacious rooms and the hundreds of breathtaking art projects offered at the museum, Puri Lukisan is most famous for I Gusti Nyoman Lempad’s impressive work – the Dream of Dharmawangsa. Nevertheless, the institute is certainly more than just a one-hit wonder.
In addition to traditional Balinese style paintings, there is a wide selection of carved wooden objects that are definitely worth a look. Museum Puri Lukisan is the most respected collection of fine art on the island of Bali, hence its significant influence on the island.
