The small sleepy town of Muang Khoun is located in Xieng Khuang Province and was once the royal seat of the Phuan Kingdom. It was very wealthy during the 16th century but unfortunately years of bloody invasions had a price.

It was the center of a number of minor wars as well as lying at the heart of the bombing raids during the Second Indochina War. At the end of this war, the town was virtually destroyed and nothing was left of its wealth after a series of robberies. The town was rebuilt and renamed, but sadly nothing remains of its former glory years apart from a few ruins.

There are many sights to see in and around the town such as a scattering of French colonial buildings and the beautiful Wat Si Phum complete with a large sitting Buddha and ancient stupas. The surrounding countryside is also worth exploring if you are in the area.

Getting There & Away

Most people arrive in Muang Khoun by bus, although journeys from Luang Prabang can take up to 12 hours and are often very uncomfortable. Journeys to towns nearby are not as long and by taking a bus to a port town, you will be able to catch a boat along the Mekong into Luang Prabang - a more comfortable way of getting to the nearest international airport.
