The pretty town of Menghai in Yunnan Province is famous for its lush tea plantations and visiting the local tea factory will be high on the itinerary for visitors to Menghai.
The factory was founded in 1940 and is famous for producing a range of pu’er teas such as túochá and bĭngchá. Now privatized, the factory can be toured and interested visitors can sample the various products.
While Menghai is a good place to visit for those who are interested in visiting the tea factory and sampling a fresh, locally grown brew, there is little else to see or do here. Coffee lovers might prefer to bypass Menghai altogether. There are places to stay in Menghai, but most people tend to visit on a daytrip from the nearby city of Jinghong.
Getting There & Away
Most visitors to Menghai fly into the Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport, which is located in Jinghong. This is an international airport that connects with many of China’s major airports. Menghai can be reached from Jinghong by bus in just 2 hours.
