A provincial capital in the Philippines archipelago, Malaybalay gets billed as the ‘Summer Capital of the South.’ It’s a charming city situated 2,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by mountains on every side.
Mt Kitangalad dominates the scenery in Malaybalay, and a network of hiking trails accesses the surrounding countryside. One of the annual highlights here is a bicycle race that leads to Malaybalay from Cagayan de Oro, but cycling enthusiasts can enjoy the terrain in any season.
Another major event on Malaybalay’s calendar is the Kaamulan Festival. This annual event celebrates the unique culture of the ethnic tribes that have lived here for ages. The word_ kaamulan_ roughly translates as ‘to gather’, and this is an excellent opportunity for tourists to learn about the indigenous cultures at work in Malaybalay.
Getting There & Away
The nearest airport is in Cagayan de Oro and can be reached in a little over 2 hours. Here there are several daily flights to Cebu and Manila. Buses regularly ply the route between Malaybalay and Cagayan, or it is also possible to rent a car and enjoy the scenic drive on your own terms.
