Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh province, northern Vietnam and is approximately 135kms from Hanoi. It is set in a beautiful valley and home to many hill tribes as well as a small Thai population.
The Sunday market is the highlight of the week for the town as people arrive from hill tribes in the mountains and other small towns to sell their wares. Locals also sell a range of products which include honey, bananas, corn, silk, handicrafts and many other local goods. The Thai community often puts on dances and cooks a variety of local food. It is a very colorful event and a must-see if you are in the area.
Mai Chau is an excellent base for those hoping to trek in the mountains. There are plenty of accommodation options and the mountains, which are a short journey away, are home to hill tribes, an abundance of wildlife and beautiful lush scenery.
From the top of these mountains, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view across the entire valley.
Getting There & Away
It is actually very difficult to get to Mai Chau as there are no public transport links from Hanoi, the site of the international airport. There is a main road leading to the town so if you hire a car, it will take you about two hours. It is possible to get to nearby Hoa Binh from Hanoi and from here there are regular buses.
