Magwe lies roughly between Mandalay and Yangon in central Myanmar, is capital of Magwe Division, and is known for its oil production. There’s not that much here for tourists apart from exploring the landscape.

The Yenangyaung petroleum wells occupy a lot of land near Magwe town, while the so called Burmese twinsa also have a fair amount of land where they dig the wells and extract the oil by hand via rope and pulley. Magwe is also known for its production of lacquered wood trays, bowls and dishes and items can be picked up for a snip at the town’s main market.

The adventure types can arrange a boat trip on the nearby Irrawaddy River through guesthouses or independently. The river lies a fair way to the east of Magwe.

Getting There & Away

You can get to Magwe by bus from Yangon via Highway 2 and Mandalay by highways 1 and 2. The town also has a small airport - Magwe Airport - but limited flights. The nearest international airport is in Naypyidaw to the east, yet Mandalay International Airport has more options including connections to Yangon.
