Situated to the north of Sichuan Province, Ma’erkang is a very sleepy village with few tourist attractions or points of interest for visitors.

Unless you know the area well or are intent on exploring each and every corner there is little reason to visit Ma’erkang. However, it does serve as an entry point to the hills of Dege, which are a short bus ride away to the west. This is a good area for hiking and trekking, although there are few facilities.

It tends to rain a lot in this area, and visitors are advised to visit during the summer to get the most out of the journey. Lovers of exotic food can try a number of dishes including dumpling liberally covered with red chilies.

Getting There & Away

Ma’erkang is located just to the west of Chengdu, which has its own international airport. It is possible to catch a bus from the large bus station at Chengdu straight to Ma’erkang (40 minutes). There are also buses from nearby towns and cities such as Songpan.
