OK, so there are fresh markets in every Thai town that are worth a wander for the unusual sights and scents they provide, but this is particularly true of Mae Hong Son.

In fact, from about 6am to 10am, it represents the peak of activity for the town with lots of bustle and bartering among the locals.

Sprawling over a few blocks, the covered market has all you can imagine and more, including strange roots and leaves from the forest. Keep your eyes open for honeycombs lifted straight from the tree and porcupines ready for the pot. If you plan to go trekking around Mae Hong Son, you might also get a bit of practice in recognizing tribal dress, as there are often hilltribe people in the market.

If you’re looking for action in Mae Hong Son, this is about the only place you’ll find it, apart from around Jong Kham Lake in the evenings of the high season, when crowds flock to the cafes and food stalls.

The market is just north of the town center and west of the airport terminal. It’s easy to walk there from anywhere in town.

  • What is it? A very lively fresh market that’s busy at dawn
  • When to go: Early morning on any day.
  • Address: Panitwattana Road
