Situated on a petite hilltop at 7,000 feet above sea level, Machu Picchu features some of Peru’s most extraordinary Inca ruins. These mysterious structures can’t be spotted from below and are regularly hidden in haze of clouds, partly explaining why they were only rediscovered at the start of the 20th century.
At the ruins, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view from Caretaker’s Hut and Funerary Rock. Below the well-known Temple of the Sun lies a cave which contains the Royal Tomb, while further places of interest are the Royal Sector, Principal Temple, Temple of the Three Windows and the House of the Priest. The picturesque Inca Trail is a UNESCO World Heritage site and South America|South America’s]] most important hiking trail, leading through the Andes and straight to the entrance of the ancient ruins.
