Situated just over 20 miles from the west coast of Luzon, there is a group of four islands that are part of Occidental Mindoro Province. Lubang Island is the largest of them all.
Lubang had a famous illegal immigrant living here for 29 years, Hiroo Onoda. He took refuge in the jungles of the island after WWII, when Allied troops had reclaimed the Philippines. He later carried on a one-man war by attacking Philippines military and police, refusing to believe the war was over. He finally gave himself up in 1974, 29 years after WWII had ended.
The island is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers. There are forests to visit that have little human contact, waterfalls with caves hiding behind them so only the greatest explorer will find them, coral reefs to dive through and golden sandy beaches to relax on.
